How Hausa Architect Was Killed To Ensure No Palace Built Will Equal One In Zaria

Meet Muhammadu Durugu, also  famously known as Babban Gwani, a 19th century Hausa architect that built several mosques and palaces in Bauchi, Birnin Gwari, Kano, Katsina and Zaria.

According to history, Babban Gwani also built the Zaria Juma’a Mosque and the palace of the Emir of Zaria. But unfortunately he was seized by the Emir of Zaria, Sarki Abd al-Karim ibn Abbas who had him executed around 1837, in order to ensure that no other palace would ever be built to equal the one built in Zaria.
